Etymology of the five senses to help stretch your imagination.

  • “See” stems from the Latin word “sequi” meaning follow.  Follow with your eyes. Look around. Visit the scene with your eyes.

  • “Hear” stems from the Greek word “koein”, to mark or perceive. Imagine yourself in the same space and time as the character in your scene, song, or painting. What do you perceive with your ears?

  • “Smell” is defined as to emit or perceive an odor. Close your eyes and concentrate on what smells may tickle, tantalize or taunt your nose in this scene. How would you describe it so we can smell it?

  • “Taste” is from the Old French word “taster”. It means to sample by mouth; enjoy.  In this scene, what is your mouth enjoying or not enjoying. If its something you’ve never tasted before, how would you describe it? How did the experience leave you feeling?

  • “Touch” is our final sense and it comes from the French word, “tochier”; to make deliberate physical contact. Tochier makes me think of the term “touchy feely”. Touch and feel what surrounds you. Another definition dating back to around 1300 means to hit, knock, mention, or deal with. For example, how would you deal with the solidness of a wood table. Would you knock on it to hear the quality? Would you run your hand along the smooth finish?

Grab a cup of your favorite drink and spend the next thirty minutes making your world come alive.

Happy creating!

Ciao for now.
